Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750)

The name Bach is well known to anyone who is associated with music in some way or the other. He is not just a phenomenal pianist but also a famous organist with much experience of playing different organs. Bach gained the reputation of being a notable performer during the baroque era. Although mainly known as an organ composer, most piano composers still credit him for paving the road for them. He has that technical know-how that was needed to play instrumental music (piano), and that is where you could say he devoted most of his time.

Some of his works were for orchestras, dance suites and also worked on solo pieces with instruments. The series he wrote for the band became famous as Brandenburg Concertos. Bach traveled a lot to work as an organist.

Joseph Haydn (1732 – 1809)

Franz Joseph Haydn is a prominent name, especially where classical music is in question. This Austrian pianist and composer have established new forms and styles of music, and his work still remains quite influential. He worked as an assistant composer to Nicola Porpora for lessons, and later in 1761, he served as a court musician at the Esterházy family’s palace. There, his popularity eventually rose, and he began to make a natural piano composition for publications as well.

With his work in music, he soon became a popular public figure in Vienna. Since he was born after Bach’s era, the Classical period, his music was greatly influenced by Bach’s work. Some of his famous pieces include The Horn Signal, The Farewell, The Queens, and many others.

Frédéric Chopin (1810 – 1849)

Chopin was a Polish composer and also a virtuoso pianist of the Romantic era who wrote primarily for solo piano. All of Chopin’s compositions include the piano. Most are for solo piano, though he also wrote two piano concertos, a few chamber pieces, and other styles. He is regarded as one of the greatest piano composers ever and even maintained worldwide recognition as a leading musician of his era, one whose “poetic genius was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation.”

His piano writing was technically demanding and expanded the limits of the instrument, his own performances noted for their nuance and sensitivity. His major piano works also include waltzes, nocturnes, polonaises, études, impromptus, scherzos, preludes and sonatas, some other styles.

Franz Liszt (1811 – 1886)

Liszt is often regarded as the best ever to play the piano. He was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, music teacher, arranger, and organist of the Romantic era. Liszt was a prolific piano composer and pianist.  Although, he is best known for his piano music, he also wrote for orchestra and for other ensembles, virtually always including keyboard. His piano works are often marked by their difficulty. Some of his works are programmatic, based on extra-musical inspirations such as poetry or art.

Liszt’s piano works are usually divided into two categories. On the one hand, there are “original works”, and on the other hand “transcriptions”, “paraphrases” or “fantasies” on works by other composers. Examples for the first category is the Piano Sonata in B minor (1853) and Liszt’s transcriptions of Schubert songs, his fantasies on operatic melodies and his piano arrangements of symphonies by Berlioz and Beethoven are examples from the second category. As a special case, Liszt also made piano arrangements of his own instrumental and vocal works.
